Bailey the Beagle might be a one trick pony, but it’s a trick that made an audience laugh out loud on national TV. During an episode of ‘Stupid Pet Tricks,” an always-popular segment of The Late Show David Letterman, Mike Bauer introduced the world to Bailey, an adorable and very clever beagle.

What’s Bailey’s specialty? Playing dead. But this dog can play dead like a champ! It’s so good that the crowd erupts into applause and laughter, and even Letterman cracks up. If you want to skip the introduction and go straight to the good stuff, watch from 1:45 of the clip. Bailey absolutely collapses on command, comes back to life, and dies again.

We’ve seen a lot of animals playing dead, but we have to admit, Bailey did bring a smile to our faces with his act. Still, this is a surprisingly versatile trick, with a few variations. Here are a two of our favorites:

1. The Gunshot

Perhaps the trendiest way to “play dead,” the internet is full of dogs…

… cats…

… birds…

… otters…

… hamsters…

… and a whole bunch of other animals crumpling to the ground, legs up, as soon as they they see the finger guns pointed at them.

2. The Oscar Winner

The true thespians of the animal kingdom don’t need prompts or cheesy props like fake guns to play dead. These guys are masters at their craft. They study their scene, spend months in character, and practice continually to achieve that picture-perfect death scene. We’re talking about dogs like this one:

That slow-motion demise is a thing of beauty.

Or this sloth:

Whose public service announcement on the dangers of texting and driving (that’s just a guess but we’re going to roll with it) is extremely effective.

Still, Bailey has his own technique, and we love it. Bravo, sir. Bravo.
