Non-Sporting dogs are the most diverse of all breed groups. Several originated from other breeds, including the sporting and working breed groups. Dogs in this group include bulldogs, Dalmatians and poodles. While other groups share common characteristics, you’ll find that these dogs vary tremendously in coat, bark, size, nature and even identity. In other words, there’s a non-sporting dog for practically every type of owner.

Some non-sporting dogs were initially bred for a reason, like fighting (the bulldog or the Boston terrier) or appearance. And while they may no longer be suitable for the job they were originally bred for, they’re wonderful companion pets. A few of them make for great guard dogs while others look for love and affection and make for ideal lap dogs. As we said, this is a mixed but very lovable bag!

Breeds in this group include:

  • American Eskimo Dog
  • Bichon Frise
  • Boston Terrier
  • Bulldog
  • Chinese Shar-Pei
  • Chow Chow
  • Dalmatian
  • Finnish Spitz
  • French Bulldog
  • Keeshond
