Did you know that more than 4.5 million Americans are bitten by dog bites each year? Or that kids are the most common victims of dog bites? Those stats come courtesy of the American Veterinary Medical Association, as does the below infographic, which lays out a few interesting statistics about dog bites.

So how do you prevent dog bites? Victoria Stilwell, dog trainer and host of Animal Planet’s “It’s Me or the Dog,” says start by not punishing dogs for being aggressive. By doing so, you only make your dog feel more insecure. Teaching dogs to be more confident can help, as many times aggressive behavior is a sign of insecurity. Also, it’s crucial to socialize your dog, especially when he or she is a puppy. Victoria shares these tips and many others in this podcast.
