The Caldwell family loves their 14-year-old senior Siberian Husky, Luka, very much. When they recently went away on a vacation, they made sure Luka had a pet sitter to check on him, feed him, and take him for walks. However, about 90 minutes before the pet sitter was scheduled to arrive on the first day of the family’s vacation, a near tragedy struck.
Amazon delivery driver John Cassabria happened to be pulling up near Luka’s home in Woburn, Massachusetts at the same time. Cassabria parked his vehicle, got out, and thought he saw a snout sticking up from the family’s pool. At that moment, he said his “heart sank.” Poor Luka had fallen into the family’s in-ground pool and was barely able to keep his head above the water. Within seconds, the caring Amazon driver hopped the fence to try and save Luka.
“I jumped into the pool with everything on. Phone wallet watch. None of it mattered. I thought only of the dog at that moment,” Cassabria shared.
Julie Caldwell and her family were only a few hours into their vacation when she received a call about the incident. Animal Control told Julie that somehow Luka’s bone got wrapped in the pool’s vacuum cord and Luka was likely trying to retrieve it when he fell in. The dog has weak hind legs and Julie says he never swims, so he likely would have perished in the pool.
Cassabria stayed with Luka for another 90 minutes after pulling him to safety. He wanted to be sure the dog was okay and waited until the pet sitter arrived. He said he happened to be in the right place at the right time and would “repeat the same actions over and over if I had to.”
