Oh, puppies! They’re the cutest thing on Earth and, quite often, the most difficult roommates to deal with. If you have a new golden retriever who’s eating your shoes or a black lab puppy who thinks your carpet is his bathroom or a baby Newfypoo who thinks yes means no, we have some tips to help you take control of your new doggo.

Tip 1: Set a Potty-Time Timer

Along with other helpful tips, dog trainer @emilyholbrook suggests setting a potty-time timer to remember when puppy needs to go outside. This will ensure you get them out of the house before they have an accident, not after.

2. Make the Kennel a Happy Place

If you’re trying to crate train your puppy, ensure you’re making the kennel a happy place. Puppies need lots of naps and discipline, so entice them into their sleep spot with cozy blankets and lots of toys, and use the crate when you’re home and also away.

3. Create a Routine

4. Teach Your Dog Their Name

The best investment you can make with a new puppy is teaching him or her their name. Once they are able to recognize what they should be answering to, it will be much easier to give them commands.

5. Be Consistent!

Without consistency, the rest of the tips won’t work! So any animal trainer will insist this is the number one tip. Consistency teaches the dog that you are always in command and always taking care of them and lets them understand what they should expect each day. In this video, @Lindseyb00th shows the results after repeating commands to her 9-week old puppy consistently. It really works!
