Sometimes we get a good laugh when our pups act like divas strutting their stuff as if they are the kings and queens of the house. But did you know that, while we find this funny, acting and being royalty is actually engraved in some of our dogs’ nature? A few breeds were regally groomed by some of the world’s prominent kingdoms. Here are some of the most popular royal dog breeds and their history as royal pets.

1. Bichon Frise

This breed, whose name literally translates to “fluffy dog,” is a charismatic and adorable dog with a curly coat, and this is probably why most royalties in Europe found it to be a favorite. It has traveled from different parts of the continent with its initial appearance in France during the Renaissance period under Francis I and later on with Henry III. It also became a favorite among Italian and Spanish nobility in the 14th century.

2. Shih Tzu

It’s no wonder why some people refer to Shih Tzus as princess type – it’s because they originate from a breed of not only royalty but also deity. It is considered to be the smallest of the Tibetan holy dogs and traces its origin from the city of Peking in China. This breed has made several appearances in the oldest of documents, paintings, and other art forms dating way back to the Tang Dynasty, which means it has been a favorite breed of Chinese royalty since 618 A.D.

3. Japanese Chin

If there’s any type of dog that was bred for the sole purpose of royalty, it’s this one. Japanese Chins are originally raised for warming the laps of Chinese aristocrats. Now we know where the term “lap dog” comes from. It was then passed on to Japan as a royalty gift, having only one task: to charm and amuse its owners and their visitors.

4. Great Pyrenees

More commonly known to the French as Le Grande Chien des Montagnes, its name translates to “the big dog of the mountains.” This is because the Pyrenees were originally seen as working assistants of shepherds and peasants of the Pyrenees. However, it became part of the royal pack when they were adopted as French court dogs. They are extremely loyal and gentle, but can also be fierce guardians of their owners and other animals they live with.

5. Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Perhaps the most popular royal family dog, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is known to be the favorite of the British royal family, especially by the Queen. As a matter of fact, Queen Elizabeth has maintained a breeding program for this dog for many years now. It was first brought to England by the Flemish and was attended to by Henry I. Since then it has been a staple dog breed in the royal palace.

This is only a partial list of all royal dog breeds that trace their roots to the oldest and most regal of families. Numerous other breeds were originally bred by established nobles from all over the world. So if you see your pups acting like they rule the house, you should no longer be surprised.
