Normally, it would be cause for concern to see a three-legged, cancer-fighting Goldendoodle swimming into a frigid Minnesota river, but Gus knew what he was doing.

According to WCCO, the 6-year-old dog jumped into the St. Croix River at the border of Minnesota and Wisconsin on April 17 while playing outside with his owner’s grandkids. He appeared to be searching for something, and then he discovered his find.

It was a newborn river otter that was really small, in fact. Gus placed him at the feet of the kids after picking him up in his mouth. Gus’s owner, Cleo Juvenile, swiftly transported the young otter to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Minnesota after cleaning it in the sink.

They succeeded! Gus’s action most likely saved the pup’s life because the river otter was far too young to be in the water, the WRC stated on Facebook. He ought to have been with his mother in a den on land. For the first 36 hours, the little guy’s very cold condition worried the staff there, but he “turned the corner” and has been recovering well ever since.
