As Hurricane Delta rolled towards the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, people boarded up their windows and prepared for the worst. Unfortunately, many animals were left to fend for themselves as the hurricane edged closer and closer. Ricardo Pimentel decided to do something to help the animals who would not be safe in the eye of the storm.
Pimentel runs the Tierra de Animales shelter near Leona Vicario, which he founded close to 10 years ago. He decided to open the doors to his home for hundreds of animals, including cats, chicks, bunnies, sheep, a hedgehog, and 300 dogs. Pimentel said the house wound up smelling terrible but it was worth it because every single animal survived the storm.
“It doesn’t matter if the house is dirty, it can be cleaned,” Pimentel shared. “The things they broke can be fixed or bought again, but what’s beautiful is to see them happy, healthy, and safe, without wounds and with the possibility of being adopted.”
People on social media followed Pimentel’s act of generosity and selflessness through Facebook posts while staffers moved the animals indoors one by one. One of the photos Pimentel posted of the inside of his home wound up going viral but he had no idea because he was so busy. People donated to help the animals and shared words of gratitude. Local residents stopped by to help clean up the aftermath and damage from the hurricane.
These days, Tierre de Animales cares for 500 animals on 10 acres of land. Thank you to Ricardo and his team for all they do for animals. He is our hero!
