Wilbur, a French bulldog who is six months old, is the new mayor of the Kentucky hamlet of Rabbit Hash.

According to Wilbur’s human, Amy Noland, “Rabbit Hash, Kentucky, has never had an actual person or human as a mayor.”

According to Noland, the custom started in the late 1990s.

She said that as a means of earning money for the historical society, a man by the name of Don Claire thought it would be a great idea to elect some kind of animal, not necessarily a dog, as mayor of the town.

The extremely ancient general store, constructed around, is one of the reasons the Ohio River hamlet of slightly under 500 inhabitants is included on the National Register of Historic Places. According to the Cincinnati Inquirer, 1831.

The village, according to Noland, is home to a thriving community of dog enthusiasts, including herself.

In addition to her Frenchie, she claims to foster kittens and cats, transport rescue dogs to their new homes, and own two rescue dogs.

She called Wilbur, a purebred dog recognized with the American Kennel Club, who she adopted four months ago, an “anomaly.”

“He was just so cute,” Noland explained.

From 2017 through 2019, according to the American Kennel Club, the French bulldog has been the fourth most popular purebred dog breed in the country.

Since Goofy, the first dog mayor of Rabbit Hash, there have been five. Pitbull called Brynn served as mayor from 2016 to 2020, according to Noland.

Even though it’s not in any way political, Noland noted that it invariably falls during a presidential election year.

Because of “all the horrible stuff that’s out there about America, the election, and Covid-19, I think I wanted Wilbur to be something positive in the press,” according to Noland, she ran Wilbur’s mayoral campaign.

According to her, Wilbur is coping reasonably well with the pressure of his new job: “He’s done a lot of local interviews, he’s received a lot of pets, a lot of belly scratches, and a lot of ear rubs.”
