April Rose thought she was about to perform a straightforward task as she stepped outside onto her terrace to assist her mother in raking some leaves and trimming the backyard.

Then, something caught her eye that was not what it seemed.

Rose said, “I happened to look down by a rocking chair and saw a little blob that I thought was a leaf.”

She walked over to the strangely shaped leaf and knelt to check it.

“I walked over to it because I wasn’t sure and, as I squatted down, I realized it was a baby hummingbird!” Rose remarked.

Rose loved birds and nature, so she felt she had to do something to help the baby that could not fly yet. To make it simpler for her mother to find the baby bird, she scooped her up and set her down on an upside-down water dish.

“She looked scared and started trying to fly, but couldn’t,” Rose said. “I started looking around to see if Mom was anywhere, but at that time she wasn’t — not that we saw, anyway.”

Rose left to try and find the nest where the baby was, but hummingbird nests are usually made high up in trees or dense bush and are about the size of a ping-pong ball. She had trouble locating the nest because it was so small and discrete.

When Rose could not locate the roost, she set to work making a temporary nest for the little bird so that it would be secure and warm.

The hummingbird mother, however, reappeared while Rose was busy, attempting to prod and pick up her wandering baby. But she could not lift the small bird since it was too heavy. “It was sad and beautiful all at the same time,” Rose said.

The newborn bird remained in the improvised nest for two days, with regular visits from her mother. Once she did, Rose was able to return the young bird to her own nest, which was hidden between some adjacent branches.

A week later, she vanished as suddenly as the bird had emerged.

Rose believes that the young bird will return to her yard the following year to build a nest and raise her own family. She is happy that she was able to assist the lost baby bird in growing up strong.
