Dogs are incredible! Their loyalty and love get us through the darkest times. They can often sense when we need a mood boost and even sense the things that are beyond our understanding. This is true for a dog named Keola. Her sixth sense not only saved her human’s life but the life of her unborn child as well. Like I said, dogs are incredible!
Keola lives with her humans Ricky and Alhanna Butler in South Yorkshire. The trio was living a happy life together. They were elated to learn they were about to add a fourth to the mix. Alhanna found out she was pregnant and the family couldn’t be happier. But even though doctors said everything was okay, Alhanna had an eery feeling that something was wrong.
Alhanna began feeling pain in her lower back. Her doctor insisted it was just her growing body, and it was nothing to be concerned about. But then Keola began behaving oddly.
“When the doctors sent me home and said there was nothing seriously wrong, she just sat staring at me so intently that it really scared me,” Alhanna explained to Mercury Press. “I posted a picture of her doing this on Facebook and make the joke about the film Hatchi where the dog also does this and suddenly my friends all started saying I should take it seriously.”
As time progressed, Keola’s behavior did as well. “No one really understood how ill I was – but Keola did. She would nudge me and cry and I could never figure out why she had suddenly started doing this. Ricky said she was distraught whenever I went to work, when she had never minded before.”
Alhanna could no longer ignore the warning signs. She went to the hospital where she was admitted to intensive care. Keola was right. Something was VERY wrong.
Keola could sense that Alhanna had a severe and rare type of infection in both kidneys. When she reached the hospital, she was mere moments away from death.
“Because it was untreated for so long, it was one of the worst cases they had ever seen,” Alhanna described her horrific experience on Facebook. “On top of that I had an antibiotic resistant bug that had only ever affected one other person in the U.K. It was killing me and the doctors told me that if I had left it any longer I would have died and more than likely my son also.”
Keola, and her amazing sixth sense, saved her family. Their baby boy, Lincoln, was born healthy.
Keola and Lincoln will forever share a special bond and the Butlers know that their son may not have made it into this world if it weren’t for their pup with a keen nose and a big heart!
