A Bird With Wings, But No Flight
Herman, a pigeon from Rochester, New York, lives a life shaped by both loss and love. His story began with tragedy—found grounded in a parking lot, unable to fly and disoriented by a head tilt. For days, he remained in the same spot, too weak to search for food. His rescue came just in time, thanks to concerned passersby who contacted Sue Rogers, founder of The Mia Foundation. Sue, known for her devotion to animals with birth defects, welcomed Herman into her home and her heart. There, she discovered the likely cause of his condition: avian paramyxovirus type 1 (PMV), a virus that often robs birds of their balance and flight.

A Life That Almost Ended Too Soon
When it became clear that Herman would never regain his ability to fly, Sue was met with resistance. Several shelters she contacted refused to take him. One even suggested euthanasia, calling Herman’s life without flight a burden. But Sue saw something different—a gentle spirit with a will to live. Refusing to give up on him, she made a life-changing decision: to adopt Herman herself. That choice would not only transform Herman’s future, but would also touch the lives of many vulnerable animals in need of love and comfort.

Finding Purpose Through Unexpected Friendships
Herman quickly settled into Sue’s home, a place filled with compassion, second chances, and lots of tiny paws. As founder of The Mia Foundation, Sue regularly fosters newborn puppies born with congenital defects—puppies who need warmth, care, and tenderness. To everyone’s surprise, Herman felt called to help. He began snuggling up to the tiny pups, offering his own version of care and affection. “He loves the little newborns,” Sue shared. “He always just wanted to snuggle with them. He even tries preening them.” In Herman, the puppies found a feathered foster brother, and in them, he found meaning.

A Summer Companion and Quiet Teacher
Despite his disability, Herman’s life is rich with moments that bring joy. Sue often takes him outside during warm weather, letting him walk through the grass and soak up the sun. These gentle outings, though simple, show just how meaningful a little extra love can be. Through Herman, Sue has become an advocate for pigeons—creatures she says are wrongly judged. “I’m amazed at their intelligence, how cuddly and sweet they are,” she says. Herman is a living example of that truth, and through his daily presence, he continues to reshape how others see birds like him.

Wings Aren’t the Only Way to Soar
Herman’s story is more than just a tale of survival—it’s a reminder that life’s value isn’t defined by what we lack, but by how we choose to love. He couldn’t return to the skies, but he found a purpose far greater than flight: bringing comfort to others. In caring for puppies too young to know the world’s cruelty, Herman offers a softness that only someone who’s known pain can provide. His journey proves that even without wings that work, you can still fly—if someone believes in you.
