A stray dog named Zelda has been waiting more than a year for a home after being abandoned at Valley Animal Center in Fresno, California.

Zelda was left behind in the shelter’s lobby, a moment that staff and volunteers say was difficult to witness. She arrived confused and anxious, and it quickly became clear that she had already been through a lot before being dumped. The shelter environment only added to her stress, with constant noise and activity making it hard for her to settle.

Because of how uncomfortable she seemed in the kennel, staff hoped Zelda would be adopted quickly. Instead, more than 410 days have passed, and she has received very little interest from potential adopters.

“Zelda has been waiting far too long for a family to call her own,” Valley Animal Center shared on Facebook.

One reason Zelda is often overlooked is that she needs to be the only pet in a household. That requirement can narrow the pool of adopters. Her behavior in the kennel has also worked against her. When visitors walk through the shelter, Zelda’s anxiety can come across as being distant or unfriendly.

“She’s watched adopters walk right past her and choose someone else every time,” a volunteer wrote on TikTok.

Staff and volunteers say that impression does not reflect who Zelda really is. Those who spend time with her outside the kennel see a very different dog.

“Sometimes, it’s hard to see a dog’s true personality behind shelter walls, and Zelda deserves to be seen for who she really is: a goofy, smart, treat-loving companion with a heart full of love,” Valley Animal Center wrote on Facebook.

Zelda did get a brief chance to leave the shelter a few months ago when a family decided to adopt her. For the first time in over a year, she experienced life in a home. Unfortunately, the placement did not last. After just three days, the family brought her back to the shelter.

Since returning, staff say Zelda has been trying even harder to connect with people. She has become more outgoing and eager for attention. Recently, she was seen reaching through the bars of her kennel, attempting to give kisses to people walking by. Even then, most visitors continued past her without stopping.

Despite the long wait and repeated disappointment, those who care for Zelda remain hopeful. They believe the right person is still out there and that Zelda’s situation will change once someone takes the time to meet her outside the kennel.

“If you’re looking for an active, loving companion, Zelda might be your perfect match,” Valley Animal Center shared on Instagram.

Shelter staff say Zelda would do best in a home where she can be the focus and where her energy and affection are welcomed. They continue to advocate for her and share her story in hopes that someone will finally give her the chance she has been waiting for.

For now, Zelda remains at Valley Animal Center, still watching people pass by, still hoping the next one will stop. Press play below see Zelda’s personality shine.
