In a world where dogs come in all shapes and sizes, one little pup has managed to stand out by being barely larger than a dollar bill. Pearl, a 2-year-old Chihuahua, has officially been named the shortest living dog by Guinness World Records, a title that’s earned her global admiration and plenty of camera time.

Pearl weighs next to nothing and measures just 3.59 inches in height and 5 inches in length. Her petite frame makes her smaller than most household items, including the average TV remote. Her owner, Vanesa Semler, jokingly told Guinness World Records that Pearl is “only slightly taller than a teacup.”

Pearl’s tiny legacy is a continuation of her family’s record-breaking history. The previous record holder, Miracle Milly—also a Chihuahua—held the title before passing away in 2020. Milly’s legacy lives on in Pearl, who happens to be her niece.

The official measurements for Pearl’s world record took place in Orlando, Florida, at the very veterinary hospital where she was born. Following Guinness World Records guidelines, her height was assessed three times using a standardized measuring tool known as a dog measuring wicket. Measurements were recorded from the bottom of her front paw to the top of her shoulders, or withers.

Pearl’s ‘achievement’ has brought her international recognition. She made her first television appearance on a talent show in Milan, Italy, where she charmed the host and audience alike. Semler joined her on stage and shared that Pearl enjoys the finer things in life. “She’s a bit of a diva,” Semler said. “She likes chicken and salmon, and she loves getting dressed up.”

Despite the crowd and bright lights, Pearl remained composed and unbothered during her time on stage. According to Semler, the Chihuahua may be an adult now, but “she’s still a child at heart.”

Although Pearl is the smallest dog alive today, she isn’t the tiniest dog in recorded history. That distinction still belongs to a Yorkshire Terrier from the 1940s who measured only 2.8 inches tall.

While Pearl’s size makes her undeniably adorable, her story also raises awareness about the health challenges often faced by very small dogs. Teacup breeds, including dogs like Pearl, are prone to a number of health issues due to their size. Many of these dogs are bred under questionable conditions, often prioritizing appearance over well-being.

Experts advise potential pet owners to thoroughly research breeders and consider adoption from reputable shelters. While tiny dogs may capture hearts quickly, their care requires thoughtful planning and a commitment to responsible pet ownership.

Pearl’s record may have started with a tape measure, but her growing fame shows that even the smallest dogs can leave a lasting impression.
