On November 15, a plane carrying 53 rescue dogs crashed onto a golf course in Wisconsin.

The twin-engine turboprop plane encountered a problem and had to land while flying from New Orleans to Waukesha. According to CBS, three persons with minor injuries were sent to the hospital. The plane “belly-landed,” in the words of Matthew Haerter, Waukesha’s assistant fire chief, on the green of the fifth hole. The two wings of the aircraft were torn off by trees as it descended.

A “major [jet] fuel spill]” of around 300 gallons occurred across the golf course and into a nearby marsh, according to Chief Haerter. The leak is being cleaned up by authorities, who are also looking into the crash’s cause.

On a more positive note, Haerter also said, “While this is a very large incident…this could have turned out so much worse…The pilot did exactly what he should have done.”

Flying Rescue Dogs to Forever Homes

Several dogs were hurt in the collision, although none were seriously hurt, according to Maggie Tate-Techtmann, director of organizational development at the Human Animal Welfare Society (HAWS), during a press conference. At-risk rescues are regularly flown from overcrowded shelters in the South to places in the Midwest and Northeast of the United States. The director, fortunately, announced that all 53 canines were still available.

Later on in that week, HAWS identified the recovered survivors as the “Western Lakes Loves.” About half of the dogs were taken in by HAWS, who had initially received them from Louisiana and Alabama. Most of those dogs had been adopted by the weekend. The remainder are waiting for their forever homes at nearby shelters.

Tate-Techtmann told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, “All dogs are doing remarkably well. I tell[the team] all the time to be prepared for the unexpected, and the team did a remarkable job meeting the needs of these dogs today. Some are already out having fun in the snow and are on the road to finding their forever homes”.
