Recently, Lisa Reams, director of Saving Grace Animal Rescue (SGAR), learned that two German shepherds were dumped at a public landfill in Yazoo, Mississippi. She sped off to see if she could help without giving it a second thought.

But when she got there, she was surprised. There were not only two adults in need; but also two puppies.

To transport the two amiable pack leaders to safety, she persuaded them to get into her automobile.

According to Jennifer Brooks, president of NYC Second Rescue, SGAR’s sister shelter in New York, “They both just went right into her car. And then she was able to get the puppies.”

Upon arriving at the Veterinarian’s office, Reams piled the entire family of shepherds into her car where tests revealed that both adults, Luke and Jenny, had heartworms that were treatable.

Phoenix and Miles, fortunately, had negative findings, and all four puppies have been approved for foster care.

Finding a foster home, however, has been more challenging. Since NYC Second Chance Rescue has many foster homes, the complete family has been scheduled to travel there.

All four canines are still up for adoption or foster care as of right now. The family lived together at the waste site long enough to have another chance at life. But the shelter staff is unsure if they will be adopted together.

“They’re safe now,” Brookes declared. “And they’ll never be put out like that again.”
