Guppy Hanson was immediately apparent to the Bryson Veterinary Clinic’s medical staff as a survivor. The young Shih Tzu and beagle mix, who had been abandoned by her mother, was born with a malformed leg. The small dog was abandoned by her owners who believed there was no chance for her.

But her medical staff thought the 4-ounce puppy could survive, so they came up with a strategy to assist.

Staff members decided to bottlefeed the weak puppy in shifts at home to nurse her overnight, but their plan didn’t last long. Guppy’s caregiver decided to stay with her from the very first night. The doggie was in her proper place.

Jess Lane told that “When my mom brought her home, I immediately fell in love.”

The little dog gradually began to gain strength. Her family was finally able to see her malformed leg when, at roughly three months, she was big enough for X-rays.

The findings revealed that Guppy Hanson’s leg was missing several bones and a shoulder joint.

“But as long as it wasn’t bothering her, the veterinarian said the leg could stay,” Lane said.

Under the supervision of her family and their rescue dog, Libby, Guppy Hanson continued to flourish.

Lane remarked that “[Libby] turned out to be a great surrogate mother for Guppy. She would clean her and love on her.”

Lane first noticed Guppy Hanson’s lack of response to loud stimuli at around four months.

“We realized that she never looked at us when we called her name and that she always seemed startled upon awakening,” Lane noted.

The young puppy was taken by her family to the doctor, who discovered that she was deaf.

However, it didn’t prevent Guppy Hanson from leading a contented life. Despite her limits, she slowly improved her ability to move and grew every day.

“She had issues climbing up the steps to the front porch,” according to Lane. “But now that she’s older, she has learned to jump without her arm getting hooked on the steps.”

The personality of Guppy Hanson has also begun to develop. She is spending more time playing with household pets and discovering new interests, including digging.

“You’d think she would have issues digging with one paw, but she doesn’t,” Lane said. “She loves to dig.”

When Guppy Hanson isn’t digging, you can typically find her chewing on her favorite stuffed animals and blankets or taking strolls through the neighborhood in her stroller. She soaks up all the love she receives from her dedicated family at the end of the day.

“My son hugs her every day and tells her, ‘You’re the most beautiful girl in the world, yes, you are!’” Lane spoke. “He’s not wrong! ”

Guppy has grown to be 8 months old and is now over 14 pounds. She has undergone a significant physical and psychological transformation since she initially became a member of Lane’s family, but one trait has remained constant: her spirit of survival.

And her family is so appreciative that they get to watch her develop daily.

Lane remarked, “She’s such a fun little girl. I cannot imagine life without her.”
