Elections can cause a lot of tension for people, but something we all can agree on is equality for dogs. A ballot measure was on the agenda in Denver, Colorado to determine if the 30-year-old ban on owning Pit Bulls should be overturned. According to NBC News, the ordinance to ban owning a Pit Bull was first enacted in 1989. Since that time, many animal advocates have been fighting to have the ban overturned.

A tweet from the City and County of Denver reported, “Denverites voted to repeal the city’s 30-year-old ban on pit bulls. Passing the measure will allow the city to grant a provisional permit to pit bull owners as long as the owner microchips the animal & complies with add’l requirements set by @DASanimals.”

Earlier this year, the city council voted to end the ban but it was vetoed by Mayor Michael Hancock. Denver dog owners cannot have more than two Pit Bulls and they must have a special permit that shows the dogs are vaccinated and microchipped. Should the dog have no incidents such as “dog bites” in three years’ time, the restrictions can be dropped.

“While Mayor Hancock has always been forthright in sharing he could not, in good conscience, sign the bill to overturn Denver’s pit bull ban, he has also been very clear he supported putting this decision in the hands of Denver voters,” said Theresa Marchetta, the mayor’s communications director.
