On January 13, Penny showed up at the door of a good citizen. It appeared that she had been dumped by the roadside and abandoned. It was a frigid night, and it was assumed she came to the door looking for food and warmth. Animal control was contacted, and she was brought to the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA.

It was clear that she had been neglected and was in dire need of medical attention. The medical team at CGHS/SPCA found that she had demodectic mange that had gone untreated, as well as secondary skin infections and lacerations on her face and neck.

CGHS/SPCA, along with the Greene County Sheriff’s Office, issued a press release with a photo of Penny, in hopes of locating the owner. Within 24 hours, the Greene County Sheriff’s Office made an arrest of Paul C. Bull, 47, of Coxsackie. If convicted, Mr. Bull could receive one year in jail and/or a $1,000 fine.

Penny has been in medical treatment and rehabilitation for two months and has made astounding medical progress. She will be joining her new adoptive family this Saturday. “Many thanks to the Greene County Sheriff’s Office for their diligence on this case, and to our shelter medical team that worked so hard in properly treating Penny. I can’t share enough how much we appreciate all the contributors who gave toward her marvelous recovery,” said Ron Perez President/CEO of the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA.

Greene County Sheriff Greg Seeley expressed that “the Greene County Sheriff’s Office is happy that Penny is going home and being given a second chance at the life she’s deserved all along.”

Sweet Penny had some incredible caretakers while she was at the shelter, and many people reached out about adopting her.

On March 10, Penny went home with her forever family — a couple who are sure they can give her the love and care she deserves.
