When a dog is abandoned, it is always painful, but happily, there are also people out there who are ready to provide these animals with the love and care they require and ensure that they find a new home.
That was the case recently when a pilot for an airline adopted a puppy that had been left at an airport.
The dog, now known as Polaris, was abandoned at the San Francisco International Airport in the fall, according to a news release from the San Francisco SPCA. According to reports, the dog’s owner arrived from abroad and “chose to continue traveling without his companion.”
Polaris was abandoned, but he was cared for well because of a collaboration between the SPCA and United Airlines.

According to Lisa Feder, Chief of Rescue and Welfare at the SF SPCA, “United’s Customer Service team took on quite a challenge to ensure Polaris would be safe, healthy, and find a loving home.”
Prior to entering the country, Polaris was subject to a quarantine period, but United staff members worked to ensure that all of his paperwork was in order.
“From the moment Polaris landed in our care, our entire SFO United team cared for him 24/7 until we were able to get permission to keep him safely in the U.S.,” said Vincent Passafiume, Director of Customer Service at United.
Thankfully, Polaris’ narrative has a successful conclusion now. A pilot for United Airlines named Captain William Dale adopted the puppy, providing a fitting conclusion to the tale.

“It’s a great feeling to see this story come full circle and that Polaris will have a loving home with United Airlines Captain Dale and his family—just in time for the holidays,” Passafiume said.
United had a party at SFO and gave $5,000 to the SF SPCA to celebrate the good news.
“We were honored that United called the SF SPCA to facilitate this adoption because of our knowledge and expertise in adoptions, as well as nearly 155 years of offering care and protection to pets,” Feder said. “We’re grateful that we can celebrate with them today, and for their $5,000 donation that will help to save lives year-round.”
Unbelievable as it may seem, people do abandon their dogs at airports in that manner. Recently, another dog was left chained up outside an airport in Iowa, but thankfully, he will soon be available for adoption.
