West Chester Fire Department responded to an out-of-ordinary call one evening. The dog owner reported that her Jack Russel mix chase a groundhog under the concrete slabs in a wooded area.

Crews spent about an hour and a half creating access to the dog. They carefully dig and moved the concrete.

“Slow and steady is how our volunteers moved the concrete out of the way,” said Dave March, public information officer of West Chester’s Police and Fire Departments. “Safety for the dog and our crews was the top priority.”

When some parts of the concrete were removed, Chloe was pulled out. The dog was dirty and with some scratches but otherwise unharmed. Sadly, it is not the same for the groundhog.

WCFD was assisted by Good Fellowship Ambulance and the West Chester Police Department to return Chloe to its owner and for a proper check-up.
