Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) is a common condition in dogs that can cause severe pain and even paralysis. It is important for pet owners to understand what IVDD is, how it affects their dog, and what treatments are available to help their pet live a happier life.

IVDD occurs when the discs between the vertebrae of the spine become damaged or herniated. This can cause pressure on the spinal cord, leading to pain, loss of mobility, and even paralysis. The most common causes of IVDD in dogs are trauma or genetics.

The signs and symptoms of IVDD vary depending on the severity of the condition. Common signs include difficulty walking, limping, yelping in pain when touched or moved, trembling or shaking, and an inability to move one or more limbs. If left untreated, IVDD can lead to permanent paralysis.

If your dog has been diagnosed with IVDD, it is important to seek treatment right away. Treatment will depend on the severity of your dog’s condition but may include medications such as anti-inflammatories and steroids; physical therapy; acupuncture; surgery; and weight management.

Medications such as anti-inflammatories and steroids can help reduce inflammation and pain associated with IVDD. Physical therapy helps strengthen muscles that have been weakened by the condition while also helping improve balance and coordination. Acupuncture has been found to be beneficial in reducing inflammation and pain associated with IVDD as well as stimulating damaged nerves and muscles for improved function. Surgery may be necessary if other treatments do not provide relief from symptoms or if there is permanent damage to the spine due to IVDD. Weight management is also important for dogs with IVDD as extra weight puts additional stress on their spine which can worsen symptoms over time.

It is also important for pet owners to make sure their dog gets plenty of rest during recovery from IVDD as this will help them heal faster while also preventing further injury or damage due to overexertion. Additionally, providing ramps or steps for your dog when getting on/off furniture can help prevent further injury due to jumping off furniture which could worsen symptoms associated with IVDD if done too often or without proper support/assistance from pet owners/caregivers.

Helping a dog with IVDD live a happy life requires patience and understanding from pet owners/caregivers but it can be done! With proper treatment, care, rest, exercise (as tolerated), weight management (if needed), and love from their family/caregivers – dogs living with this condition can still enjoy a good quality of life!
