According to Kennel Club statistics, the number of people who decided to bring new dogs into their homes in the last couple of years increased by over 8%, and demand for puppies has not decreased since the lockout.

There are 221 distinct breeds of purebred dogs to pick from, along with countless crossbreeds, so you’ll need to think carefully before choosing the newest member of your family.

Psychologist Stanley Coren’s book “The Intelligence of Dogs” ranks breeds according to their innate propensities for intelligence, obedience, and adaptability. Before making a choice, keep in mind that different dog breeds, especially in terms of size, suit various lifestyles.

Here are the nine largest and smallest dog breeds. A large dog may be your best option if you lead an active lifestyle and have a home with a garden, while a tiny dog may be a better choice if you are less active and live in an apartment.

English Mastiff

Officially, the English Mastiff is the world’s largest dog breed.
The Guinness Book of Records states that in 1981, a dog by the name of Zorba weighed 142.7 kg and was 27 inches tall.

Great Dane

The magnificent Great Dane is the tallest dog in the world, if not quite the biggest. The Great Dane named Zeus, who stood an astounding 44 inches off the ground, is listed in the Guinness Book of Records. Despite their size, they are renowned for their affection and playfulness.

Saint Bernard

Saint Bernard is large and powerful enough to travel for miles through deep snow because it is bred to rescue people in the Alps. They can weigh up to 91 kg, are devoted, and make excellent guard dogs.

Neopolitan Mastiff

Neopolitan Mastiffs are gentle giants from Italy that can weigh up to 70 kg. They are known for their unconditional love for their families but can be wary of strangers.

Irish Wolfhound

Irish Wolfhounds are good dogs to have around children because they are very low-aggressive and can reach heights of up to 35 inches.

Chihuahua

Turning away from the gentle giants and toward the tiny puppies. The Chihuahua is the world’s tiniest breed of dog, weighing just 0.9 to 2.7 kilograms. A Chihuahua named Miracle Milly, who stood 3.8 inches tall and weighed less than 0.5 kg, holds the record for being the tiniest dog ever.

Pomeranian

Our list of the world’s smallest dog breeds places the Pomeranian, which weighs between 1.9 and 3.5 kg, third. Poms are the ideal breed of dog for traveling.

Yorkshire Terrier

The second smallest breed of dog, the Yorkshire Terrier rarely weighs more than 3.2 kilograms. They make surprisingly good guard dogs despite their diminutive stature.

Toy Poodle

A fully grown Toy Poodle will only weigh 6-7 kg, making it the smallest of the three Poodle sizes (the other being Standard and Miniature).
