Donna Lochmann knew she had to go investigate the situation as soon as she received a call about a scared puppy in the basement of an abandoned home. She was ignorant of the fact that a small family was there and needed assistance.

According to Lochmann, the chief lifesaving officer at Stray Rescue of St. Louis, “As soon as we got out of the car, we could hear multiple babies crying.”

After following the screams to the basement, Lochmann discovered three fearful puppies, each around six weeks old, yelping for attention.

Lochmann simultaneously heard their mother barking in another room of the house. Lochmann rounded up the puppies and transported them to her Jeep before setting up a trap for their mother. However, the frightened mother dog fled from the trap instead of looking it over.

“We never want to leave mom behind,” Lochmann said. “So I went back a few more times hoping that she would still be in that area.”

Lochmann returned to the house twice, but neither time was successful in locating the mama dog. Then, on her third visit, she overheard a recognizable bark coming from the house’s first floor.

A fourth tiny puppy was lying at Lochmann’s feet when she ascended the stairs from the basement to the first floor after hearing a tiny whimper.

Lochmann remarked, “I couldn’t believe it. We searched everywhere the day we were there for the original puppies and didn’t see any more anywhere.”

Up until she reached the landing at the top of the stairs, Lochmann wasn’t sure how the puppies were getting into the basement. She discovered a sizable hole in the floorboards there where the puppies appeared to be descending.

Four additional puppies were waiting for Lochmann on the first floor.

“Altogether there were a total of eight puppies including the three we found the first day,” according to Lochmann.

Before going back inside to look for the puppies’ mother, Lochmann made sure all the puppies were secure in her Jeep. This time, she placed a trap within the residence and awaited Mom to investigate.

Later, when Lochmann went back inside to check on the mother dog, he discovered her safely trapped.

“That day, we got eight puppies total and their mama off the streets,” Lochmann said.

To receive care, Lochmann brought the mother dog, Windy Day, and her puppies to the shelter.

Following Lochmann’s placement of the first three puppies into foster care, the remaining five puppies quickly found foster homes. Windy Day, their mother, is still looking for a family to take her in and love her.

“I’m hoping that somebody will take her soon,” Lochmann said. “She’s super sweet.”

Windy Day was advertised on the website of Stray Rescue of St. Louis to place her in a devoted family. The loving mother dog is currently spending as much time as possible with the shelter staff, who are happy that she’ll never have to experience loneliness or fear again.
