At shelters, rescue organizations, and foster homes all across the world, countless deserving pets wait for their forever family. Sadly, some people never manage to settle down. One of these dogs was most likely going to spend the rest of her life at the excellent family-operated Villalobos rescue facility headed by Tia Torres.

The Torres family has owned Summer, a senior dog at Villalobos, longer than any other dog at their facility. Tia pretty almost gave up on the idea that Summer would ever find true happiness. The Torres family did their best to make room for the adorable dog and has shown her the affection and care she needs.

Tia says, “She and my kids basically grew up together.” That’s how long Summer has been at Villalobos. Since 8 weeks old, Summer has lived at the rescue center. She is now getting on in age. It breaks Tia’s heart that no one ever stepped up to take the sweet girl in.

“Through no fault of her own, she’s still here. She got overlooked,” Tia says in the video below. At this point, Summer’s age is affecting her physically. She has bad arthritis, so bad in fact that her legs are awkwardly bent. She moves a bit slower. But mentally, she is a happy, grateful dog.

The Torres family lacks the heart to turn any dog away, which accounts for the large number of dogs living at the rescue facility. Tia and her family make an effort to pay attention to what prospective adopters are searching for as they arrive in search of the ideal companion. Additionally, the family learns about their residences and matches them accordingly. Usually, they have a selection of many canines to choose from. After meeting the “candidates,” the families choose the one who best fits their needs. Summer was frequently a choice for adopters, but she was never selected.

Then, miraculously, a summer-specific application arrived. Upon seeing Summer on the Villalobos senior page, the prospective adoptive, Eileen, knew right away that Summer belonged with her. The Torres family was eager to see Eileen.

At the center, Summer slowly walks into the room, her age obviously showing. But this doesn’t deter Eileen. She gets onto the floor, at Summer’s level, to say hi.

Summer starts to wag her tail. The cutest thing ever to witness! The Torres family is always honest and fair to all the adopters and tells that they don’t think Summer will live a full year due to her advanced age and health. Does this discourage Eileen?

No.

Eileen simply says: “She needs us.”

Eileen then explains that if she didn’t adopt Summer and found out she passed away while at the center, never having the opportunity to be in a home, it would break her heart. The next step for Eileen was a no-brainer.
