Rebecca Jones and her family’s dog Bella had been missing for about three weeks when they found her at the Nebraska Humane Society. What should have been a happy reunion between the dog and her family ended up complicated due to a state ordinance in Nebraska which says that a pet becomes the property of the humane society after three days in the shelter. Then the pet can be made available for adoption.

Bella had her paperwork filled out for adoption by another family so the Jones family was unable to take her home. Jones said she and her family were escorted out by a police officer from the shelter when they were trying to prove ownership of their dog. This story does have a happy ending, and the Nebraska Humane Society shared this post to their Facebook page.

@LindaBennett comments, “NHS does amazing things every day. Keep on doing what you do! I’m so proud to have such a great local shelter so engaged and so caring. Thank you for all you do!” @ SarahPerry adds, “I’ve been in this situation before – glad the dog got to go home to the original owners. Wins all around for working through it together!”

Pam Weise, who works with the Humane Society, said a family who loses a pet in Nebraska should come to the shelter every three days to look for them to try and keep these situations from occurring again.

The new family agreed to give Bella back to the Jones family. The Jones family was reunited with their dog Sunday evening.
