Chewy — the pet food and products company — gave one little hot dogger the option to move again. Their charity provided a holiday miracle.

Trey the Dachshund used to run around freely but a couple months ago his owner Patty Rader returned home to find him immobile and in pain.  She had left him on his own many times before. Now, she returned to find him paraplegic.

“We honestly don’t know what happened. We left him unattended, which we have done several times. We got home and noticed he wasn’t acting like his usual self.”

The pup — who resides with Rader and her husband in College Corner, Ohio — whimpered and was sensitive to touch, so they took him to chiropractors and other professionals before  a veterinarian finally diagnosed him as paralyzed from the mid-back down.

Taking a cue from notes to Santa programs, the “Letters to Chewy Claus” program answered a written request from the Raders for a wheelchair to help Trey.

The company offered dog parents the option to submit a holiday wish list application for Chewy Claus to evaluate. Just like the man in the North Pole, Chewy chose who had been “naughty or nice,” to distribute gifts upon need.

“My mommy and daddy love me more than all the sand at all the beaches, but I know they are struggling.” Trey’s plea (written by a family friend) read. “What I really want for Christmas is to be able to run and play again but my heart tells me what I need are essentials for paralyzed pups like myself.” The Raders wanted Trey to walk again.

Chewy has already received more than 65,000 letters. Each applicant automatically received a pound of dog food.  Although there was likely tremendous competition, Trey’s request was not ignored.

Chewy recorded the video of Trey taking his first steps in his new wheels. His owners were visibly moved.

As well as a wheelchair, Trey was gifted an assortment of items designed to improve his quality of life, with Rader admitting they have been “truly blessed” to have received this kind of help. “We weren’t sure how we were going to actually come up with money to get him wheels. It is so amazing.”

She’s now looking forward to having the Trey they know and love enjoying his life again. “To know Trey is an absolute blessing. He never meets a stranger. He loves everybody and he’ll kiss you and he won’t stop until you scold him for it. I would love for everybody to meet Trey. He’s amazing.”
