Enzo, the country’s second-best French bulldog, will compete in the Westminster Dog Show in New York on Wednesday. Melissa Mulcahey, Enzo’s owner, raised him in Salinas after he was born in Ohio.
Mulchahey, who has worked with purebred dogs for over 20 years, believes it would be a dream come true for Enzo to win this renowned award, which his mother won just a few years ago.
“Enzo will be following in his mother’s footsteps. His mother won her breed in 2020, so that
would be very exciting,” according to Mulchahey.
Enzo, who will turn two on June 30, began competing at the age of six months. Alberto Montila, a native of Spain who has lived on the Central Coast for ten years, has competed with Enzo in several tournaments. According to Melissa, Alberto and Enzo have such a strong bond that they travel together and even share a bed.
“He’s been working with Enzo since he’s been 12 weeks old,” Mulchahey added.
Enzo will compete against 40 other dogs in his group at the Westminster Dog Show, and if he wins, he will advance to compete for best in the show.
Enzo doesn’t do anything to prepare for the competition. He bathes, has his nails trimmed, and has his whiskers touched up every now and then. Enzo, according to Mulchahey, maintains as good a physical condition as feasible.
Enzo’s stage presence sets him apart from the competition. “He has a commanding presence that makes the judges look at him. And that’s what they’re looking for. They’ve gotta have that something extra. It’s not something you can teach them. They either have it, or they don’t, and he definitely has it, “Mulchahey stated.
Mulchahey expresses her concerns about the popularity of the French bulldog, which is the
country’s second most popular breed. “We hope that people if they are interested in the breed, will watch and really learn what good quality and healthy French bulldog is able to look like and make a good choice if they choose to add one into their family,” Mulchahey added.
Enzo likes being a couch potato and barking at the mailman when he is not competing. Grilled chicken and a nice steak are two of his favorite foods.
