An annual spay and neuter clinic is organized by HelpAWS, an animal rescue group in Saint Lucia. This event is a fantastic technique to control the island’s dog population. The employees and vets who spend long days caring for the animals find their work satisfying but often taxing.

The rescue team was glad to be leaving for home after day three of the clinic since they were exhausted when they noticed something that made their hearts stop. As it turned out, their day was still far from over.

According to HelpAWS founder and CEO Charlene Penney Troubetzkoy, “[We] noticed the cardboard box sitting on the ground next to the trash can. We stopped to investigate, knowing what we would find but willing it not to be true.”

Five little puppies were cradled together in a wet brown box.

Troubetzkoy regarded the adorable faces that protruded from the box. Troubetzkoy has assisted numerous canines in challenging circumstances during her work. However, times like these never get any simpler.

Troubetzkoy added, “No matter how many times it happens, it still makes my heart sink to look inside and see tired, scared little eyes looking back at me.”

The puppies were swiftly carried to the shelter by the rescue team, where they were examined for illness and injuries. The puppies weren’t sure what to make of their new surroundings at first.

“They were scared at first, which is common,” according to Troubetzkoy. “It didn’t take them long to realize they were finally somewhere safe, though, where they would be fed and loved.”

The puppies were allowed to live happily at the shelter once their health had been cleared. Shelter staff started noting personality variations among the dogs as they played together. Chrissy, one specific puppy, stood out for her friendly disposition.

“They have the sweetest personalities, all very curious and outgoing,” Troubetzkoy said. “Chrissy is the most patient of the litter and will wait her turn for treats and cuddles. They all still piled up on each other for naps, like they were still in that little cardboard box.”

Each individual in the “box litter,” as the shelter referred to them, eventually got their ideal forever home. The shelter staff members were happy because they never gave up on aiding animals in need, even when they were completely worn out.

There are roughly 60 pups at HelpAWS right now who are in need of a home! If you’re interested in adopting a dog from HelpAWS, visit their adoption page. To help other animals like these puppies, make a donation to HelpAWS
