A snarky senior dog named Loco just reached a significant birthday milestone. In the animal shelter, birthdays typically pass without much fanfare, but for Loco, the Spartanburg Humane Society staff knew they wanted to do something the pup wouldn’t soon forget.

Angel Cox, chief operating officer of Spartanburg Humane Society, told The Dodo that the team gathered and sang to the animal while it was sporting a birthday hat and frilly collar. She enjoyed her sweet potato cake, which she had. A Happy Birthday banner for her office door was given to her by the bakery that created the cake.

Numerous of Loco’s favorite people were on the guest list, but dogs were not permitted.

“She is picky about her people,” Cox said. “When she loves you, she really loves you. But the people she does not like, she hates them. And she does not like other dogs at all.”

Even though there were no dogs present, everyone had a good time honoring the hot little nugget they’d all grown to know and love for more than two years.

The face of the refuge is Loco, who was turned over to it in 2020 owing to lingering medical problems. She even has a comfortable place of her own to escape the dogs and people she would like not to be around.

“We moved her to an office that is more comfortable,” Cox said. “She has 3 to 4 dog beds, and sleeps in all of them.”

Through her time living in the shelter, Loco has dealt with her fair share of medical issues.

“When she arrived she was 13, heartworm positive, thyroid issues and issues with her hips, so she was not a great candidate for adoption because she came with so many issues and her care would be expensive for most people,” Cox said.

Loco has now shown that she is a true fighter. She frequently receives vaccinations, tests negative for heartworms, and takes thyroid medicine to maintain her health.

She is in generally good condition despite being a little older than many of the people living in the shelter. She no longer has a new home because she is a “office dog,” but that doesn’t mean she is enjoying a regular shelter life. She is one of their most cherished canines, according to Cox, who credited her sprightliness for this.

Let’s hope Loco has many more birthdays!
