Firefighters saving eight pups from a burning building is bravery. It occurred on June 21 in the tiny town of Jacksonboro, South Carolina, when Colleton County Fire-Rescue responded to a structure fire. A wooden storage structure had been affected by a yard garbage fire.
Crews arrived on the scene and started putting out the fire, but they soon realized something wasn’t right.
Chief Barry McRoy said: “As they were working, [firefighters] could hear whining coming from the building. The structure was built elevated off the ground. Once the fire was out, they were able to look under the structure and that’s when they found the puppies.”
Firefighters rescued seven puppies in total from the area beneath the burned-out building. When the fire personnel and ambulance arrived, the puppies were put inside, covered in blankets, and given oxygen to help them wake up.
The puppies, born to a stray mother, were taken into custody by officer Ashley Preacher after Colleton County Animal Services arrived. When Preacher arrived, she surveyed the area and discovered an eighth puppy hidden beneath some tools.
Preacher gathered all eight pups after ensuring everyone was still alive and seemingly unharmed, then decided what to do with them for the evening.
“I wound up taking them home with me,” she said. “My heart couldn’t bear the thought of them in a kennel all night, so I brought them home, gave them all a good bath, and kept them warm.”
The encounter had not hurt the puppies, although they were dirty and covered with soot. Preacher took them to Animal Services in the morning, where they were examined before being taken to a nearby shelter that places animals in foster homes.
Preacher claims that two puppies were adopted after only 24 hours.
