A three-year-old mutt called Sprout has spent most of his life at Dog Trust in Basildon, England but his luck recently changed. He was adopted this month by a family in Essex, from  the shelter that has found homes for several hundred dogs this past year.

Kelly McMaster, Manager at Dogs Trust Basildon,  said. “We love seeing every dog find their perfect home, but it is especially heart-warming when our longer-term residents find their match.”

According to Sprout’s new owner, Leila, the process took some time and patience. “We are so pleased to be able to give Sprout a new home. Due to his history, we took some time to get to know him at Dogs Trust, with me visiting him regularly. He then started to come on day visits before we finally brought him home.”

The effort paid off and she took Sprout back with her permanently to Essex in time for the Christmas holiday. “It’s not all been easy with Sprout. When we first got him, he was very reactive on the lead. But we started using positive reinforcement training, which was fun for both of us. Sprout is a changed dog.

He’s still cheeky and full fun, but we can take him anywhere. He gets compliments all the time on his behavior. I’m so glad we gave the Sprout the chance he needed. He has brought us so much joy, love and belly laughs. We will forever be grateful to Dogs Trust Basildon for helping us find each other.”

Sounds like a Happy New Year is in store for Leila, Sprout, and family!
