Stray Rescue of St. Louis,  found a scared pitfall growling under a van in a residential Missouri neighborhood. The rescue worker, Donna Lochmann —skilled enough to realize the reaction was just a fear response — edged in closer. “It’s not a mean thing. It’s just that they’re scared and that’s how they somewhat protect themselves.”

She threw some Vienna sausage links under the vehicle that the emaciated pup gobbled up quickly. From his bony appearance, he was likely starved. Lochmann was able to lure him into the street by throwing more snacks to the outside of the van.

He came forth, tail wagging, but had terrible sores all over his hips from sitting on concrete for so long. The pup was dangerously underweight. The veterinary staff put him on a re-feeding plan with medicines to assist him to gain weight at a healthy rate.

Named “Avalanche,” he was picked up quickly by a foster home. “He’s doing really well and getting along with everybody.  Lochmann said. “He’s enjoying where he is.”

“You can just see the difference in his eyes. There’s more life now than when we first got him. He doesn’t have that defeated look anymore.”
