A seven-year-old beagle has joined the family of the royal Duke and Duchess of Sussex! And of course, their newest pet is a rescue whose story has made the news.
According to the Los Angeles Times on Wednesday, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have recently introduced a family pet they have named “Mamma Mia.” She was adopted after the Envigo Facility in Cumberland County, Virginia, was forced to close due to unsanitary conditions.
After being cited for more than 70 welfare infractions since July of last year, the puppy factory was just shut down. It was initially used to breed Beagles for testing pharmaceutical items, and since 2021, over 300 animal deaths with no apparent cause have been reported.
As a result, Envigo Facility transported 4,000 neglected and now homeless beagles to shelters, covering the adoption fees by paying $100 for each dog and $150 for every dog that was still nursing babies.
PETA, which described the facility as “a prison-like factory,” investigated before deciding to shut it down.

Shannon Keith, an advocate for animal rights and the founder of the non-profit Beagle Freedom Project, assisted the royal couple with their adoption.
“The duchess called me personally — She calls on my cell with no caller ID and says, ‘Hey Shannon, this is Meghan,’” Kieth shared. “We talked for 30 minutes, and I thought, ‘Is this Megan Fox?’”
She then recalled how the couple had come to meet the dogs because Mamma Mia was the mother of the new litter. She had been shocked to see them choose Mamma Mia rather than the puppies, which they had explained was because older dogs are frequently left behind.
Can they possibly become any more holy? Imagine being Mamma Mia and escaping from a cruel breeding facility after spending seven long years there to find yourself in the lap of luxury. She is in for quite the retirement.
Prince Harry turned around as he was about to depart and said, “Well, we can’t leave yet because there’s something in that back house she needs. Does she have a favorite toy or something? ’”
The lawyer said. She located the elusive toy, and the two immediately left.
Along with offspring Archie, 3, and Lilibet, 1, Mamma Mia joins two siblings, Pula and Guy, who were rescued in 2015 and 2017, respectively, and who also dwell at their home.
Once more, Meghan and Harry come to the rescue.
