The American Foxhound is a medium-sized hound dog breed that has been around since the days of George Washington. This breed is known for its speed, endurance, and work ethic, making it a great companion for families and people with other pets. With their independent and stubborn nature, they can be a challenge to train but are ultimately loyal and loving companions.

When it comes to physical characteristics, the American Foxhound is slighter of bone and higher on leg than the English Foxhound. They have more rear angulation and arch over the loin, giving them an athletic build. They also have long legs and floppy ears which make them look even more adorable! The females are 21 to 24 inches in length and weigh about 40-60 pounds while males are slightly larger at 23 to 25 inches in length and weighing up to 70 pounds.

American Foxhounds are known for their intelligence, loyalty, and friendly nature. They love being around people, especially children, so they make great family pets. They also get along well with other animals such as cats or other dogs if properly socialized from a young age. As scent hounds, they have an excellent sense of smell which makes them great hunters but can also lead them astray if not properly trained or exercised regularly.

American Foxhounds need plenty of exercise in order to stay healthy both physically and mentally. A daily walk or jog is recommended as well as some playtime in a fenced area where they can run off leash safely. These dogs love running around outdoors so having access to a large open space is ideal for them. It’s important to keep in mind that these dogs were bred as pack hunters so they should never be left alone outside without supervision as they may wander off in search of prey!

Training an American Foxhound requires patience and consistency as these dogs can be quite stubborn at times due to their independent nature. Positive reinforcement methods such as treats or praise should be used when training this breed rather than harsh punishments which could cause them to become fearful or aggressive towards humans or other animals. It’s important to start training early on so that your pup learns good habits from the beginning!

Owning an American Foxhound can bring joy into your life through its loyal companionship and playful spirit! With proper training, exercise, nutrition, grooming, socialization, and veterinary care these dogs can live long happy lives with their owners by their side every step of the way!
