The Newfoundland is a large, heavy-coated breed of working dog. They are known for their sweet temperament and dignified bearing. They can be black, grey, brown, or black and white in color. The male stands 28 inches tall and weighs between 130 to 150 pounds. The female is slightly smaller. Newfoundlands were originally used as working dogs to pull nets for fishermen and haul wood from the forest. They are also great guard dogs with an outstanding, sweet temperament and courageous nature.

The Newfoundland breed originated on the island of Newfoundland in Canada. It is believed that they were created by crossing native dogs with the Great Pyrenees breed from France and possibly other breeds such as the St. John’s water dog. The breed was first recognized by the Canadian Kennel Club in 1886 and by the American Kennel Club in 1917. Since then, they have become popular family pets due to their loyal nature and gentle disposition.
