Last year, Will Badman didn’t travel to Weymouth Beach in Dorset, England, early in the morning to see the sunrise. Sammy, the amiable seal that has lived on the beach for more than two months, was the person he was looking for.

During the height of the quarantine, when few people were outside of their houses, Sammy first showed up on the beach. The baby seal appeared to have found the ideal spot to relax on the sand while fishing.

Sammy saw his beach crowded with people when regulations lifted and the weather warmed up, but unexpectedly, he didn’t appear to mind at all.

In fact, he appeared committed to forming friendships.

“Sammy has a habit of popping up on people unexpectedly and tries to get onto their surfboard, kayak or on people’s back as they are swimming,” Badman told The Dodo. “[He] seems to love the cameras … when he comes onto the beach to rest.”

Sammy was photographed by Badman during his visit so that he wouldn’t have to approach too close, but the seal appeared to be aware of the fact that he was the focus of attention. He waved, smiled, stuck out his tongue, and played hide-and-seek with the photographer while mugging for the camera.

Sammy likes taking rides on paddleboards when he gets bored swimming. He may then relax and warm up without having to worry about swimming back to shore.

Sammy seemed to like the companionship and frequently cuddles up to the riders.

To defend Sammy, who has now emerged as a local star, a crew of volunteers has been organized. Despite his often welcoming nature, the juvenile seal should not be handled or disturbed with because he is still a wild animal (despite his best efforts). People are encouraged to keep their dogs on leash, keep their distance, and avoid approaching the animal.

Sammy continues to love his temporary home and thrill everyone who visits because of the volunteers.

“He was great to see and is not something that we normally have in this part of the UK,” Badman said. “I traveled an hour to go and see him and it was well worth it.”
