Some say superheroes wear capes, but for others, they have fur, walk on fours, and like to go for walks on a leash. Bertha Martinez looks at her rescue dog in a totally different light, and perhaps as a superhero since the amazing dog saved her son’s life recently. Martinez admitted she was afraid of Pit Bulls for a long time, so she wasn’t sure her family would keep the dog, named Astro, whom they rescued from the streets.
“I’ve always been scared of Pitbulls, and when we brought him home, I wasn’t sure we’d keep him for a long time cause he was going to grow up,” Martinez shared. “We never thought in a million years he’d do something like that.” Martinez is referring to the heroic act Astro performed recently, which saved her son’s life. The boy was in the midst of a medical emergency when Astro alerted a neighbor. He went outside, barked at a neighbor, alerted him, and 911 was dispatched.

Enrique Duenas-Aguilar, an EPFD spokesperson in El Paso, Texas, said Astro was even trying to climb into the ambulance with the owner. He wanted to be sure in his doggy heart that his owner would be treated well and things would be okay. Firefighters had to lure Atro into a vehicle so a family member could come to pick him up at the scene. The sweet dog was concerned for his owner’s well-being.

From man’s best friend to man’s lifesaver, Astro is being called a hero. The town recently awarded Astro with a medal, doggy cake, and celebration. The Martinez family remains surprised by Astro’s actions because he was never trained to alert anyone in an emergency. Ramon Herrera, interim director for El Paso Animal Services, reminds people not to judge dogs based on their breeds. Astro is a shining example of an extraordinary dog.
