Two Good Samaritans saved a cute, scruffy miniature poodle mix who was fighting to keep afloat on the French Broad River in North Carolina.

Two women witnessed the poodle puppy fall into the river on January 9 as he went past them “as if something had spooked him,” according to a story posted on Facebook by the Asheville Humane Society.

One of the women leaped into the river and retrieved the puppy before he was swept away, but “within minutes, the miniature poodle mix began to go beneath the water” in the river’s “turbulent currents.” The women reported the event to the Asheville Humane Society.

“It had stormed the previous day, so the river level was high with powerful currents. The water was freezing,” explained Becky Doty, an animal control officer in Asheville, on the shelter’s social media post. “He was very lucky that the two women were there. They are heroes.”

The puppy was picked up by Officer Doty from his rescuers and taken to the humane society, where he underwent a thorough medical examination and was determined to have suffered no harm from the traumatic event. The dog was given the all-clear and entered a foster home.

The dog’s foster dad, Peter, described him to the shelter as “traumatized and shivering with dread” when they first took him in.

“He is now safe and sound with a new microchip to prevent any more misadventures,” wrote the Asheville Humane Society in a Facebook post on Friday.

“Microchips are your pet’s return address!” the shelter added, encouraging followers to get their pets microchipped to increase the chance of reunification.
