You may think that your own best friend would never bite you or another person, but even the friendliest dog may bite under the right circumstances. If a dog is afraid either because it’s approached by a stranger or in a new and frightening situation. If a dog is in pain due to illness or injury it may snap as a way of protecting itself. A dog can also bite simply because it’s confused or stressed.

No one likes to think of being bitten by a dog, whether it’s their own dog or a strange dog they encounter, and TikTok user @Petlabco has posted five major warning signs that a dog is about to bite.

@petlabco If you notice any of these signs, it’s best to keep your distance and avoid interacting with them #dogbehavior #dogfacts #dogbite #dogbiteprevention ♬ original sound – PetLab Co

p[The following signs a dog is about to bite stated in the video above are:  showing their teeth, growling, avoiding eye contact, raised fur on their back and being able to see the whites of their eyes. A TikTok user added their own opinion, and @JordanSewards says, “My dog hates my dad’s guts for no reason so for his safety when he’s around the dog is in the cage. We think it’s from past trauma because of nothing my dad did.”

Prevention is the best course of action, and it is important to never approach or touch a dog that you don’t know or that appears aggressive. Always respect a dog’s space and body language, and never provoke or tease a dog.

Hopefully you’re never bitten, but if the worst happens it’s important to seek medical care immediately to prevent infection or further injury.
