Many experts in dog behavior contend that dogs don’t actually grin. They claim that when a dog appears to smile, it is either engaging in the action known as capturing, or exhibiting a submissive fear grin to show its harmlessness. When a dog exhibits a behavior and the owner rewards them, the dog learns to repeat that behavior in order to get attention or treats.

Many dog owners, however, will assert that the statement above is untrue since their dog does, in fact, smile. And after seeing this adorably adorable @Olliepopmaltipoo, we inclined to agree with his owner. That smile is lovely!

We like the adorable head tilt and tiny closed-mouth grin! Whoever said that they don’t grin either hasn’t had a dog or hasn’t seen one smile since they’re gorgeous when they do, according to @Eisha, belongs to the “Yes, dogs do smile” school of thinking. @Kelsey is also on board with the dog grin, writing, “Yes! My Pom is always smiling and if he’s not I’m terrified trying to figure out what’s wrong.” @Snowwhite adds, “Yes they do!! My dog smiles at the park and as soon as I tell her we are going. It’s wonderful.”

Then does your dog laugh? Whatever the actual truth may be, I think we can all agree that this adorable Maltipoo sure does appear joyful. Or are you among the experts who maintain that dogs aren’t capable of what humans think of when we think of “smiling”?
