A video depicting a dog’s first interaction with their owner’s new puppy has piqued the interest of pet enthusiasts online.

This year, Lenny the chihuahua received an early Christmas present when his human friends brought home Ernie. Ernie, like Lenny, is a chihuahua by breed, and as the video shows, the two have become close friends since he moved in.

Their owners posted a TikTok video illustrating the early stages of their special friendship under the handle sineadmichelex.

At the time of writing, the video depicting their cute early encounters has received over 1.9 million views, leaving viewers moved.

The dog owners gift Lenny with a red cardboard box, which is lovingly placed on their kitchen floor. The lid is then opened to see Ernie curled up within.

“We bought our puppy a puppy,” the caption reads. “This is how it went.”

As evidenced by the video, Lenny wastes no time in getting to know his little charge, rushing straight over to Ernie for a good sniff.

The puppy appears frightened at first, but as the movie unfolds, we witness how the pair gradually built a friendship that sees them engaging in extended play bouts on the family couch.

Their best buddy status is officially proven with the video’s closing shot: a photo of the couple nestled close together having a nap.

“How cute is that,” joannefitzgeral65 wrote. “Awww, every dog needs a friend,” Airen Perry975 added. “Ours was not happy but now [they have another dog] they are inseparable!”

“I’m crying,” Indigo_Horses_Dead commented. “That’s the cutest thing ever.” Steampunkgem also wrote: “It’s good to see they’re getting along well cause sometimes introducing new dogs can be difficult.”

Things might be especially difficult for senior dogs, according to Dr. Jerry Klein, chief veterinary officer of the American Kennel Club.  “Senior dogs are creatures of habit and crave their routine and consistency,” he said. “Any disruption could cause anxiety or possibly result in jealousy or envy.”

To minimize such problems, he suggests paying attention to your older dog before greeting the new canine. Feeding your older dog first and putting it on the leash before the younger pup are two other suggestions.”These small gestures can make a huge difference in the attitude of your older dog,” Klein explained.

Fortunately, it appears like Lenny and Ernie are getting along just well. According to Jonsmithxcharlotte, their owners bought Lenny “a best pal.”
