Taco, a 3-year-old golden retriever, has stayed by his baby sister’s side since the day Vanora returned home.

According to Vanora and Taco’s mother, Claudia Hughes, “When we would lay her down on the floor or our bed, Taco would just lay down next to her.”

Taco, who took on the role of a babysitter, was always attentive to Vanora’s needs.

Hughes stated, “When we would wake up in the middle of the night to feed her, he would be right there with us.”

Whenever Vanora started grabbing the railings of her crib in the mornings to meet Taco, Taco was pleased. Taco realized his one-year-old sister could walk, though, which was the most exciting thing ever to him.

Here’s Taco’s response to Vanora’s first few steps:

Of course, Vanora did not learn to walk overnight, and Taco was just as pleased to acknowledge each of her tries as she was learning.

Hughes recalled that Taco started getting very happy as soon as Vanora walked a little with a baby walker. Hughes claimed that as soon as Taco noticed Vanora pushing her walker, he began to jump from side to side.

When Taco discovered Vanora could walk, his case of the zoomies went out of control, but he was still
aware of the need to maintain a safe distance from the little child when his excitement reached its peak.

According to Hughes, “Taco would go and lick her, then go and have some zoomies, then come back and lick her again.”

But Taco is not the only Hughes family member working on being kind to their sister.

Hughes stated, “We have shown Vanora that we hug Taco, we pet him gently, and that we give him kisses on his head. But, if we get mad at him, we don’t hit him.”

Taco and his sister have found new ways to communicate now that Vanora can walk, such as playing hide-and-seek while dashing around their kitchen island. Whatever the contest or achievement, Taco will undoubtedly be a proud participant in it all.

Hughes recalled the moment she first saw Taco: “We felt like he could be the dog for our family and that he was going to be good to our future children.”
