On February 1, a fire broke out in a multi-unit complex in Detroit, Michigan. The Kelly family said the fire started in the unit below their home because one of the children who lived in that dwelling started a fire when they were playing with a lighter that ignited a nearby mattress.

Horrifically, Janet Kelley’s one-year-old child was trapped in a playpen with the fire raged around the child and smoke started to fill the home. The most miraculous aspect of this story is that the family’s beloved dog Blue stayed with the baby until she could be rescued. Watch below to see this amazing story.

USA Today reportsKelley’s 1-year-old daughter was still stuck in a playpen inside the house when firefighters arrived, she said. The family dog, Blue, refused to leave the house and “alerted rescue to where she was located.”

What an amazing dog. The family is so lucky to have such a smart and loyal member of their family, and thank goodness that both the baby and dog were okay. From the aforementioned news report, “Blue, a three-year-old Pitbull Lab mix, is a rescue dog that Kelley has had for two years.

“(Blue) is very protective over all of us,” she said. “He also loves his best friend Smokey, the family cat.”

The family has been staying in a hotel room and due to lack of space Smokey the cat is still at the destroyed residence. The family has been visiting Smokey to make sure the cat has food and water and to let Blue play with his feline friend.

What a lucky ending for this family and what an incredibly wonderful dog they have!
