Even while humanity has shared a history of discovery, struggle, and change, there is at least one aspect of that history that hasn’t changed.
And that’s why people adore pups.
War was raging throughout the Pacific in the early 1940s, especially in the Philippines. Gregory Schnakenberg, a historian and archivist, had reason to think that a roll of film labeled “The Philippines 1942” he recently discovered may provide an untold insight into that infamous struggle.
Schnakenberg understood his fears were unfounded when the picture was rerun, though. The “long-forgotten” footage wasn’t of gruesome battle scenes, but rather something quite different:
While working in our archives, I found an old metal box. Inside was a long-forgotten roll of silent 8mm film marked “The Philippines 1942”
Excited at possibly discovering lost WW II footage, I sent it to specialists for care and digitization.

Schnakenberg’s tweet soon gained popularity, which further proves how deeply even old footage of pups can touch people.
The urge to film at all seems universally understandable, even though much information about the footage may have been lost to time, like who was behind the camera, the exact place and date, and what happened to the joyful pups.
Schnakenberg posted on Twitter, “Excited about potentially finding missing WWII video, I forwarded it to specialists for care and digitization.
It was just too adorable not to photograph.
