The Labrador Retriever is no longer the dominant breed for the first time in 31 years. Despite how great and attractive they are, Labrador Retrievers are no longer the most popular breed of dog owned by Americans.

The devoted lab has been overtaken by a small, wrinkled-faced pup with bat-like ears in the most recent ranking of dog breed ownership by the American Kennel Club. See the video to see whether you have one of these adorable small dogs sitting next to you on the couch.

These little dogs are not only gorgeous, but they are also playful, sociable, and content to live in an apartment, which may account for their rise in popularity.

The majority of TikTok users appear to be big fans of this little dog, with comments like “Smoooooooooshies!” from @MelissaTheGroomer, “We love well bred frenchies!!” from @Solo, “Beautiful pups,” and “Beautiful pups” from @2deviously, while @Rosie complains that “I love frenchies but I hate how the only reason they’re the most popular.

Rosie is referring to what FrenchBulldogRescue.org refers to as “fault colors,” “non-standard” colors, and (by dishonest breeders seeking to sell puppies for exorbitant rates) “unique” or “designer” colors. A fad color is any color that does not adhere to the breed standard. Dogs that have been bred to have these “designer colors” typically have greater health problems. By ensuring that you only get your Frenchie from a rescue or an ethical breeder, you can safeguard yourself (and your dog). Also, French Bulldogs might be vulnerable to certain health concerns, like hip dysplasia and respiratory disorders, which is another good reason to be cautious when purchasing one.

The top ten dog breeds in America, according to the American Kennel Club, are:

English Bulldogs
Retrievers from Labrador
Retrievers’ Goldens
Shepherd dogs of Germany
Poodles
Bulldogs
Rottweilers
Beagles
Dachshunds
Short-haired German Pointers
