Animal shelters do their best to care for all the homeless pets that come through their door, but the loud noises, small spaces, and solitude can take a toll on the dogs and cats.

A three-year-old pit bull mix named Laurel was not adjusting well to shelter life. Staff and volunteers at Collin County Animal Services did their best to give the affectionate pup some quiet time.

Laurel would use this time to cuddle with people and take naps. The loving dog just wanted a family of her own.

After spending countless sleepless nights at the overcrowded shelter, the sweet pup was adopted.

Shelter volunteers created a TikTok page to help shelter dogs find loving homes. Laurel was a favorite with staff and volunteers and was featured several times, including a video showing her getting ready for her “freedom walk”.

The day had finally come for her to leave the shelter for good and Laurel couldn’t contain her excitement. Her caretakers had been telling her for months that her special someone was out there, and she couldn’t wait to meet them.

The happy occasion was captured on video which showed staff getting her ready by gathering her favorite toys and fitting her with a new collar. When they placed the new collar around her neck, the stressed dog did the most heartwarming thing – she flashed the biggest smile.

Laurel knew that she was going home.

With tears of joy streaming down their faces, staff lined the hall and watched as Laurel took her “freedom walk” out of the shelter. She made sure to give kisses to all the people who cared for and loved her.

Her new family was just as excited as Laurel and couldn’t stop smiling. She will live the rest of her life in a loving home and that is all any shelter dog wants.

There are thousands of dogs like Laurel in shelters across the country waiting for someone to take them home. Make the life-saving decision to adopt.
