Thousands of beagles have recently been rescued from a life of suffering and heartache after the Virginia breeding facility where they live has been ordered to close. They have been seeking new homes thanks to the Humane Society.

Sami is one of the canines which has been receiving a new beginning. She had lived her entire existence being denied even the most fundamental puppy pleasures, just like all the other dogs rescued.

But today, everything is different.

Sami was taken in as a foster dog last Thursday by Karen Shrader and her family, who volunteered to open their home to her. Sami’s lack of familiarity with kindness and the idea that the world is not necessarily dangerous was immediately apparent.

Shrader told The Dodo, “The first day she was very timid, but she claimed a dog bed in our family room. She would only venture a few feet from the bed.”

Sami soon found the backyard’s lush grass, though. She made her first-ever contact with grass there.

And this is how she responded:

“By Saturday, she was doing zoomies and chasing balls,” Shrader said.

Sami was overjoyed.

She had been losing out on so much joy in the breeding facility. She now has everything.

Sami has transformed from a melancholy, timid dog into a joyful, energetic puppy in just a few days. It has been a great delight for Shrader to see her foster dog thrive.

“It warms my heart to know she has gone from a place where she could not be a dog and now enjoy the freedom to run, play and feel the loving touch of a human!” Shrader said. “She has received love from my family and she gives us so much joy!”

Shrader hopes that Sami’s story will encourage more people to consider adopting one of these beagles or supporting the Humane Society by donating. Being foster parents to Sami ultimately did not go as planned for Shrader and her family.

“She has won our hearts. We are adopting her!” Shrader said. “Yes, I’m a foster failure!”
